Why choose wool for your cloth diapering needs?

Wool is completely breath-able, allowing circulation throughout so your baby stays dry and less prone to rashes. It acts similarly to a thermostat helping to regulate body temperature, keeping your baby warm during cooler months and comfortably cool in the warmer months. It is an amazing insulator which is why many people use it in so many products despite the weather. It never gets too hot or too cold!

You will be amazed how wool will keep your baby comfortable while keeping the bed dry until morning. It offers superb leak protection, especially for long outings, overnights, and heavy wetters. It's natural lanolin(an oil secreted from the skin of sheep) gives it a moisture resistant barrier so liquid actually wicks away from your baby. The urine, in turn, dissipates and distributes more efficiently throughout the diaper. The scaled fibers on the outside of the fabric work to cause liquid to run off the surface. You will find the outside of your wool will remain dry to the touch even when the diaper on the inside is soaked!

While wool can repel moisture, it can also absorb liquid. It is highly absorbent and can hold up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet. The hairs of its fiber snarl together to create air pockets that trap the moisture. Despite the fact that it may be full of moisture, it will not feel wet or clammy. Instead, the moisture will immediately begin to evaporate into the air leaving your baby to feel dry and happy.

In addition, wool is extremely comfortable to wear and easy to maintain. The elasticity of the wool provides a comfortable fit and the garments will easily yield to body movement. It is also unique that it remains resilient and will return to its natural shape after wear. It will maintain its shape virtually forever!

Amongst the many amazing qualities of wool, it is also naturally anti-bacterial increasing the health benefits of cloth diapering. The lanolin, which is secreted onto the wool, makes it naturally anti-bacterial. It does not need to be washed very often. Usually it will only need to be washed about every two weeks or whenever soiled. The lanolin contains fatty acids, having acidic pH in the wool. When it reacts with the base pH in urine, a chemical reaction occurs. Acids and bases react to create water and salt in turn causing the urine to transform. It is neutralized because of the chemical reaction. Therefore, wool is "self-cleaning," leaving no odors, until all the lanolin is used up. At this time, you'll notice that your wool isn't performing as well as it usually does. This is because of the build-up of salt on the woolen fibers and limited lanolin left in the wool to neutralize the urine. At this time, you will need to simply wash and lanolize them.
